Boryeong Mud Festival

The Boryeong Mud Festival is an yearly festival which takes place during the summer in Boryeong. It is a town around 200 km south of Seoul, South Korea. The 1st Mud Festival start in 1998 and, by 2007, the festival captivated 2.2 million visitors to Boryeong.

The mud is use from the Boryeong mud flats, and trucked to the Daecheon beach area, where it is applied as the centerpiece of the ‘Mud Experience Land’. The mud is regard rich in minerals and use to manufacture cosmetics. The festival initially creating as a marketing vehicle for Boryeong mud cosmetics. Although the festival takes place over a time of around two weeks, it is most popular for its final weekend, which is well-known with Korea’s western people. The final weekend of the celebration generally comes on the second weekend in July.


In 1996 a variety of cosmetics is manufacture by using mud from the Boryeong mud flats. The makeup products are full of minerals, bentonites, and germaniums, all of which occur naturally in the mud from the area.

In sequence to enhance these cosmetics, the Boryeong Mud Festival take place. Through this festival, it is expect that people would learn more about the mud and the cosmetics. The festival has turn out to be well-known with both Koreans and western tourists, as well as American Military personnel stationed in the country, and foreign English teachers working in Korea.
