Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo is a smaller zoo placed in Central Park in New York City. It is part of an integrated program of four zoos and the New York Aquarium handled by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and is recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

The zoo started in the 1860s as a menagerie, which makes it the first elegant zoo to start up in New York. The zoo was customized in 1934, with improvement of many new structures varied in a quadrangle around the sea lion pool. Lastly, the zoo was remodeled in the mid-1980s and reopened in 1988, changing the old-fashioned cages with naturalistic atmosphere.Central Park Zoo Inside

The zoo is home to an inside jungle, a leafcutter ant area and a cooled penguin house and currently vacant polar bear pool. It also coordinates breeding programs for some vulnerable species: tamarin apes, Wy toads, thick-billed parrots and red pandas. There are also fruit bats in the jungle and a large free-flight area for birds. In July 2009, a snowfall leopard display was start out. Getting Here

The Zoo placed near the southeast corner of Central Park, and is quickly accessible by mass transit. If you must drive, please consult the list of nearby parking lots below. No parking is available at the zoo itself.

By Subway : Take the N, R, or Q trains to the Fifth Avenue/59th Street station in Manhattan, and walk north four blocks to 64th Street. Or take the Lexington Avenue #6 train to the 68th Street/Hunter College station, walk west 3 blocks to Fifth Avenue, then take a left and walk four blocks south.

By Bus : The following buses stop on Fifth Avenue, between 59th and 65th Streets: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M66, Q32.

Car Parking : If you are visiting by car, consider the following garages: Narragansett Garage at 124 E. 63rd Street, Regency Garage Corp. at 245 E. 63rd Street, Renoir Garage at 225 E. 61st Street.Central Park Zoo Tour
