ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is a safari park and zoo situated at Whipsnade UK. It is one of two zoos (ZSL London Zoo in Regent’s Park, London) that owned by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). ZSL is a charitable trust dedicated to the global preservation of animals and their habitats.

Inside the zoo, visitors may walk, use the zoo’s bus service, or drive their own vehicles between the several animal enclosures. In the ‘Asian’ area where some animals allowed to walk free around the cars. Zoo also gives a train/rail trip, which is famous by the name of Jumbo Express.


ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is one of Europe’s most significant wildlife preservation parks. It is house to 2,955 animals, many of which endangered in the wild. Almost all the animals kept within significant enclosures, but like Peafowl, Patagonian Maras, and Red-necked Wallabies, walk around the park.

There are lots of Exhibits in this zoo for visiting, such as –

Passage through Asia: it is a large paddock with no boundaries between visitors and the animals. The houses of herds of Bactrian camels, hog deer, yak, chital and Père David’s deer and Blackbuck.

Lions of the Serengeti: Opened in 2005, Lions of the Serengeti is home to a pride of 7 African lions.

Splash: Formerly the zoo’s Dolphin Pool, Sea Lion Splash is a daily showing in which the zoo’s three trained California sea lions perform tricks and stunts in their pool.

Elephant herd: Whipsnade Zoo keeps a herd of ten Asian elephants, consisting of bull Emmett, cows Mya, Lucha, Kaylee, Karishma and Azizah, Kaylee’s female calf Donna, Karishma’s male calf George, and Azizah’s male calves Scott and Sam.

Rhinos of Nepal: it houses a group of four greater one-horned rhinoceros – Hugo, , Behan and a young male called Bali.

Birds of the World: An everyday educational show in which keepers present different bird species showing their natural abilities to visitors. Birds used in the show include blue and yellow macaws, European eagle owl, Harris hawks, toco toucan, bald eagle, and hyacinth macaws.

Discovery An indoor exhibit that houses many various types of smaller, exotic animals. These include Pygmy marmosets, leafcutter ants, praying mantises, Lake Malawi cichlids, salmon-pink bird-eating spiders, locusts, Burmese pythons, plumed basilisks, Yemen chameleons, green tree pythons, and poison dart frogs.

Children’s Farm: An area focused on children and housing domesticated animals such as turkeys, llamas, alpacas, cows, silkie chickens, horses, donkeys, and goats, most of which are free-walking.

Other animals: Other species in the zoo’s collection that are not part of a themed exhibit include Amur tigers, blesbok, Thomson’s gazelle, Oriental small-clawed otters, red pandas, gemsbok, sloth bears and etc.


Tansports :

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is just to the north of London in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. The visitor is easily reached there with the help of public and own transport. Some are following

By Bus : The park is now served by Centrebus route X31, linking Luton Central Station, Luton Centre, Dunstable and Hemel Hempstead with the zoo. It runs approximately every two hours, Monday to Saturday (with some extra peak time buses).

By Train : The nearest stations are Luton and Hemel Hempstead (both about 10 miles away from the Park).

Trains from London : First Capital Connect train services run from St Pancras to Luton. Average journey time of 30 minutes. London Midland run services from London Euston to Hemel Hempstead & Tring also with an average journey time of 30 minutes.

By Car : Only 20 minutes from the M25 (junction 21), ZSL Whipsnade Zoo signposted from the M1 (junction 9 and junction 12) and all major roads.

Whipsnade Zoo Opening Times :

Open everyday of the year except Christmas Day. Last admission is one hour before the closing time.
